Project Building Resilience, a joint effort of the UP National Engineering Center and the UP Law Center, is leading a public awareness campaign on the importance of building resilient structures throughout the country.

Earthquakes, floods, fires, and other hazards continue to threaten Filipinos each year—resulting in hundreds, even thousands of casualties.

The question is, is there a way to reduce the harm to life, health, property, and public welfare.

Yes. We need to build resilient structures that withstand these hazards—and protect their occupants and those in surrounding areas.

Ensuring that our structures are disaster-resilient will:

  • Reduce the rate of mortality arising from disasters
  • Reduce the number of people affected by disasters
  • Reduce economic loss due to disaster damage
  • Protect critical infrastructure (evacuation centers, hospitals, etc.) and prevent the disruption of basic services
  • Ensure that business and economic activities continue; this helps sustain economic growth throughout the country

To help achieve this, Project Building Resilience enjoins the public to support the passage of the Philippine Building Act of 2018.

Once passed, this law will require:

The Philippine Building Act of 2018 will streamline the processes from permit applications, to inspections and assessments of buildings and structures.
